Liam

Liam stretched his neck and back as he climbed from the truck at the Shadow Woods site. If he and Drake were going to be having sleepovers on work nights, they’d need to figure out a better sleep routine. He smiled to himself. Not that he was complaining about the previous night’s activities, but damn, he was exhausted. Between being tired and the cold, wet bite in the air, he was grateful for the very large cup of coffee he’d stopped to buy on the way to work.

He pulled out his digital tablet, the rolls of blueprints, and his laptop and went to work setting up his office in the bed of his truck. He often appreciated the ease of the digital blueprints, but sometimes there was no denying that a physical print was still better. Glancing around the site as trucks pulled in and workers began to gather, Liam noticed that Dave Houston and his concrete truck were nowhere to be seen.

What the hell?

Liam pulled up the schedule and saw that, once again, Dave had opted out of a couple bigger, better paying jobs and taken several smaller, earlier drops. Liam wanted to give the man the benefit of the doubt, but he was definitely making it hard with all the unexplained swaps.

As Liam thought about Dave, his eyes traveled to the latest concrete forms. His gaze came to an abrupt stop when he saw Eric standing by the concrete.

What the actual hell was going on? He hadn’t had enough sleep, Dave was mysteriously taking crappy jobs and was already late, and now Eric Cooper was hanging around the concrete? Liam ran a hand over his face as he breathed out several curse words. With a fortifying sip of his coffee, Liam headed toward the concrete forms.

Eric seemed deep in thought and hadn’t heard Liam’s approach. “Hey, man,” Liam called out.

The property manager jumped about a foot before turning toward Liam with wide eyes. “Oh, hey,” Eric rushed out as he shoved his hands in his pockets. “Sorry, couldn’t sleep. Took a walk and ended up here.”

“You doing okay?” Liam noticed Eric’s bloodshot eyes and haggard appearance.

“Honestly? No,” Eric mumbled.

Liam nodded, giving Eric time to talk if he wanted.

“I saw on the news that the police said all the bodies were sexual predators. Did you see that?” Eric stared at the concrete wall.

“I did,” Liam answered.

“Seems like maybe it’s not such a bad thing, ya know?”

Liam’s pulse quickened. “Yeah?”

Eric was quiet for several moments. “Had a family member, a little kid, who was sexually abused. All predators are scum and deserve to suffer. That’s my take.”

“Can’t say I disagree,” Liam offered.

“Just thinking a lot about it. Not sure the police need to worry about the deaths if they’re all shitbags who hurt innocent kids.” Eric shrugged and hunched deeper into his jacket. “I’ve got a list of repairs I need to get to. Can’t sleep at night because of the nightmares, can’t sleep during the day because people are counting on me.
